Mr. Cheyne worked in a local studio for some time honing his skill as an expert photographer and developer. During this time he developed a keen interest for photography and print enlarging which led him to open a lab for professional photographers. The original lab was opened in 1923. It was situated in a converted chicken coop with only a single enlarger and a few trays of chemicals.

John has been a photographer for most of his adult life. John joined the U.S. Navy in 1962 where he was a photographer. After his service to his country, including 2 tours of duty in Viet Nam. In 2003 John closed his walk-in studio and now only does on location photography. This allows him to get better acquainted with his customers and capture the personality of each customer.
